Questions and answers

Why should I become a member of Kommunal?

Kommunal is Sweden’s largest trade union in the welfare sector. We have more than half a million members who work in many different professions in municipalities, regions and the private sector.

The guiding principle of trade unions is the idea that you can achieve more together than individually. And because we are so big, we can negotiate better working conditions in our industries, improve the work environment at workplaces, and negotiate nice discounts and offers for our members. We also lobby politicians and decisionmakers on issues that concern us, resulting in more resources for welfare and more equal pay and conditions.

Kommunal works to make every job and every workplace better. Employment must be secure, the work environment must be good, the salary must be fair, and everyone must have the opportunity for professional development. Because Kommunal has so many members, we get a “seat at the table” and can influence the development of our industries. Decent working conditions lead to higher quality welfare, making them a smart idea for everyone!

As a member of Kommunal, you can easily keep track of the rules about your schedule or holidays, among other matters. Through the trade union, you can get involved with small and large issues and help make a real difference.

Is the student membership free of charge?

As a student member, you can choose between a free membership or a full membership. Free membership does not include membership insurance, while full membership gives you one of the best insurance packages on the market.

A free student membership is time-limited and only valid during your studies. Unless you choose to become a paying member, your membership will automatically end a couple of months after you complete your studies.

As a student member with a free membership, you do not committ to paying anything when you finish your studies.

Who can apply for student membership?

The student membership is aimed at people studying at a study rate of at least 50% for a profession within Kommunal’s agreement areas. You can study at an upper secondary school or in an adult education programme.

For example, student membership is for students attending:

  • Upper secondary school (child and leisure programme, health and social care programme, or natural resources programme)
  • Komvux (adult education)
  • Adult education college
  • SFI - with training in the same programme, for example SFI + childminder or SFI + assistant nurse
  • Courses and programmes included in the redundancy programme agreement
  • Labour market training courses organised by the Swedish Public Employment Service, for example for cleaners
  • Employers who are responsible for the training, e.g., for bus drivers

Here you can see a list of the professions we organise. You can also read more about the industries with which we work.
